Men's Health Week UK: Insights into Men's Health Taboos
As we observe Men's Health Week in the UK, it's an opportune moment to shine a light on men's health issues, especially those shrouded in taboo. Recent research involving 1208 men has uncovered a stark contrast: while a significant 70% of men report seeking professional help for health concerns, they are considerably less proactive than women in performing routine health checks.
A Snapshot of Men's Health Practices
Our survey reveals some concerning statistics:
- 33% of men have never checked the amount of steps they take.
- 22% have never checked their bodies for lumps.
- 27% have never examined their moles for changes.
- 25% have not inspected their skin for growths, changes, or signs that injuries or sores are not healing.
These findings highlight a crucial gap in preventative health practices among men, which can have significant implications for early detection and treatment of health issues.
The Struggle to Talk About Health
Opening up about health issues, especially those considered taboo, remains a significant challenge for men. Although 72% of men believe it is important to break the silence around health taboos, many still find it difficult to discuss these issues openly. Here’s how comfort levels compare:

- Only 31% of men would talk to a close friend, compared to 54% of women.

The topics men feel most comfortable discussing include:
- Hair loss - 29%
